One child was hit on the head and the other on the abdomen. Family members say they saw policemen shot. PM denies shooting.

Two children, aged 4 and 7, died after being shot in a shootout in Duque de Caxias, in Baixada Fluminense, on Friday night (4).

The crime took place in the Santo Antônio community. According to residents, the two girls, who are cousins, were playing at the door. Emilly Victoria, 4, was shot in the head. According to family members, she would turn 5 later this month. Rebeca Beatriz Rodrigues dos Santos, 7, was shot in the abdomen.

The grandmother of one of the girls said she was coming home work. The girls were waiting for her on the sidewalk to buy a snack when a police car passed by around 8 pm. Family members said they did not know if there was any type of harassment, but they only saw the police shooting.

"I was coming home work and I got off the bus. I heard at least ten shots. The bus went by and the blazer was stopped and took that plunge to get out. He stopped in front of the street and simply fired," said Lídia Santos, grandmother of Rebeca.

Family members cannot say whether there was any type of persecution at the time.

The Military Police say that a team the 15th Battalion (Duque de Caxias) was patrolling Rua Lauro Sodré, at the height of the Sapinho community, when gunfire was heard. According to the PM, the agents did not fire and the team left on the move.

Still according to the residents, it was the neighbors who took the victims to the Sarapuí Emergency Care Unit (UPA). The bodies were sent to the Legal Medical Institute (IML) of the city.

The case is being investigated by the Baixada Fluminense Homicide Police (DHBF).

Birthday party

The family says that the girls always used to play together. They were looking forward to Emily's birthday party. It would be the girl's first party.

The relatives organized to help with a small family celebration and, according to them, almost everything was already prepared. The family decided to wear the party dress at the funeral.

"They were being children, one of 4 and the other of 7 who were being children. Which child never played at the door, under the supervision of the grandmother and great-grandmother? It was the minute that the grandmother entered the house and that happened", said Ana Lúcia, the girls' cousin.
