In Mexico, Jalisco cartel starts harassment campaign against elite police

Cartel declared war on the Guanajuato Tactical Force for 'unfair treatment' of group members

The violent Mexican cartel in Jalisco has launched a campaign of harassment and terrorism against elite police officers in Guanajuato, a city in the central region of the country, reported the Associated Press.

The criminal group kidnaps and tortures members of the Tactical Force to obtain the names and addresses of other officers, in a wave of violence against the government of Andrés Manuel López Obrador. The group hunts and kills police inside their homes when they are off duty, often in front of the family.

López Obrador advocates a non-violent approach to trying to ease the conflict with drug trafficking since taking power in 2018. The president even freed a gang leader to "avoid bloodshed" and said he preferred to focus on the long term, with projects to generate jobs and thus prevent young people entering crime.

On the streets, however, the elite force known as the Tactical Group would be treating criminals with excessive rigor, in the cartel's opinion. “If you want war, you will get a war. We already know you are and we will go to all of you,” said a banner installed by the criminal group in a central building in Guanajuato.

The panel also says that for each member arrested, the cartel will kill two Tactical Force officers. Guanajuato authorities declined to comment on how many members of the elite group have already been killed.

The state police, however, confirmed a recent case of a police officer who was kidnapped his home last Thursday (27). His body was found on a highway over the weekend.

Dismissal and mass escape

David Saucedo, a security analyst Guanajuato, told the AP that many officers have already deserted the service, abandoned their homes and are fleeing the city. The city's journalistic cooperative, Poplab, recorded at least seven police officers killed on their days off.

Guanajuato has recorded more police officers killed than any Mexican state since 2018. At least 262 police officers were killed between 2018 and May 12th. The average is about 75 police killed each year.

The state is the most violent in Mexico due to the incessant struggle between the Jalisco cartel and other local gangs supported by the Sinaloa cartel, a former rival.
