1. {C}Noémia de Sousa

Mozambique, 1926 -2002

Known as the "mother of Mozambican poets", her work represents the resistance of African women and the struggle of the Mozambican people for their freedom.

The edition of "Sangue negro", Noémia's only book, arrived in Brazil in 2016, by Kapulana publisher. The work is composed of 49 poems, written between 1948 and 1951, which circulated at the time in newspapers such as The African Shout.

"She is one of the great Mozambican voices, she participated in the struggle for liberation and wrote a lot about what it means to be a woman and, mainly, what it means to be a black woman", explains Natasha Magno.

Noémia has a connection with Brazil, which is present even in her poetry, when the author mentions her time in the country. She dedicates one of the poems to the Bahian writer Jorge Amado. Read an excerpt:

The stars are also the same

those that light up in the nights of Bahia

of mystery and macumba ...

(What does it matter, after all, that the people are Mozambicans

or Brazilian, white or black?)

Jorge Amado, come!

Here, in this African village

the people are the same too

is the brother of the seafaring people of Bahia,

companion of Jorge Amado,

friend of the people, justice and freedom!

(SOUSA, Noémia. "Poema a Jorge Amado")

Suggested book:

Black Blood (2016), Kapulana
