Human Rights Rapporteurs suggest economic sanctions and arms embargo to fight the military junta that governs the country

The UN (United Nations) has been demanding the international community for incisive action in Myanmar. Mary Lawlor and Tom Andrews, Human Rights Rapporteurs at the organization, suggest "strong, coordinated and focused action, including economic sanctions and an arms embargo."

For experts, Myanmar is facing "a terror campaign with brutal force". They suggest creating "an emergency coalition of nations" to act against the junta in Myanmar, nearly 900 people have been killed since the coup, according to the UN.

UN rapporteurs have received allegations “reliable sources” that human rights defenders have been the target of arrest warrants and are being forced into hiding to escape government violence in the Asian country.

These activists had their homes invaded, their property seized and there was threats and harassment against family members. Many who failed to escape were eventually arrested, including labor rights advocates.

International Coalition

Since the coup d'état in Myanmar, lawyers and journalists covering the protests have also been arrested. According to Lawlor, these professionals have documented mass violations by the military and, as a result, have been targeted.

In the joint statement, UN rapporteurs stress that "the people of Myanmar desperately need action." Lawlor and Andrews call on all nations to “support people taken hostage by the illegal military junta”.

Violence to Women

Lawlor and Andrews also highlight the work of women who are human rights defenders in Myanmar and are at risk, including those living in remote rural areas.

UN experts point out that these women are often beaten and kicked before being taken to prison, they may be victims of torture and sexual violence.
